What is bladder?

Bladder is a hollow organ seen in the lower abdomen. The function of urinary bladder is to collect ans stores urine produced by kidneys.When the capacity of bladder reaches its maximum to collect urine the bladder contracts and releases the urine and leaves the body through a tube called urethra. This process is called urination.

Cancer occurs when normal cells undergo a transformation, where the growth of cells get multiplied abnormally without any control. Cancerous cells have the capacity to spread to other parts of body and this state is normallly called metastasis. Cancer cells which spreads through lymphatic system or blood stream can become more dangerous to the organs which they have spread.

Bladder cancer is different from other cancers. Of the cells which forms the bladder, the cell lining inside the bladder are likely to get affected more. Cancer is differentiated depending up on the type of cells it is affected.

Different types of bladder cancer are :
  • Urothelial carcinoma
  • Squamous cell carcinoma
  • Adenocarcinoma

Symptoms:

The first sign to be noted importantly is blood in urine which is visible to eye. It could be the first indication that one is suffering from bladder cancer.

Other Symptoms include : Burning sensation and acute pain while passing urine, Frequent urination, Not possible to urinate though urine is there, Color change in urine.

The primary thing is that when color of urine changes it is advisable to consult a doctor immediately.

Diagnosis: Patients medical conditions and lifestyle habits are the first thing to anaylze. This will help doctor to conclude that if the patient is succumbed to bladder cancer.

Other tests include in the diagnosis are :

Urinalysis:  This test is to conclude the level of proteins in the urine.

Urine Cytology: In this the cells which are excreted through urine will be send for examination and it gives a better conclusion of abnormal cells.

Cystoscopy: Using cytoscope the presence of cancerous cells can be detected. This process is doing by inserting the cytoscope through urethra.

CT Scan: CT Scan gives a detailed report on presence of cancerous cells than ordinary X-rays.

The ultimate confirmation of presence of cancerous cells is confirmed through Biopsy.

Treatments:

The mode of treatment depends on patients age, medical fitness and other undergone treatments for cancer. Clinical expertise is good in treatment of bladder cancer.However the common treatment practices are :
  • Chemotherapy
  • Continent diversion
  • Radical Cystectomy

Once the treatment is over, a series of tests are done to finalise the success rate of treatment.Periodical tests and follows up visits are required to stop the occurance of cancer again. Further treatment is required only when cancer cells are present.
